  1. In my country, you can't see alcohol or trad among people. Drinking alcohol isn't allowed in our country religion. The law prevents people to sell or drink. Also ,alcohol is consider a crime punishable by law. When I arrived at the hotel, there was a bar to drink and drinking was allowed for people. On my way to dinner, there was a person acting in a strange way. I was scared and wanted to run away. My husband wasn't beside me I ran to tell him what happened. Some one who was in the street said "don't be scared he was drinking". I asked him"Is drinking allowed here?!". He told me"yes it is". After that he explained that people drink here to forget their problems,to celebrate, or spend quality time. They can enjoy themselves with friends. I think it's universal everyone has a happy moments like to celebrate. At the end, I understood in the next time when I saw someone drink, there is a reason for doing that. Now I know the difference between culture as well as the reason.

legal verdicts. Also alcohol has damaged for health and lose your mind.It is possible
to do many things, you don't know about it like as you are driving, when you drunk
probably you get accident.Sometimes you have fun when you drunk, but the

  4. The common greeting is universal, but it is not how to say hello. There are so many ways to say hello as countries and cultures around the world. For example: Venezuelans have a habit to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. But this may have another meaning in other culture. For this reason, I prefer to greet people from different culture with a hello and a friendly smile.

  6. That culture bump left a deep impression to me. One time, a German friend invited my colleague and me to have a meal at home. He prepared a lot of food, including vegetable salad. He said that is his good work. Its color looked very good. My colleague took some salad at first in his dish. But he found it was not so easy to eat, because the vegetable leaves were big and long. It was a challenge for him with knife and fork to eat salad. In china, we use chopsticks. He wanted to take salad in mouth with knife and fork, but he failed. He saw me and said, this kind of cutlery was too trouble. He can't use it well. The friend smiled at him. He was very considerate. He took some salad and demo to us how to eat. First, he put the vegetable leaves folding small with knife and fork. And pressured it with knife, then forked it into his mouth. My colleague followed him to do. Finally he succeeded putting the salad into his mouth. He was very happy. Suddenly his expression was very embarrassed. He couldn't accept this kind of food. In china, vegetable are cooked to eat. He felt as if to eat grass. He was so sorry and said:”Why this leafy vegetable is raw? Can it eat? We eat cooked vegetables ”
“Really? Cooked vegetables? Are they good?” The friend was incomprehensive.
“No, not all, most vegetables are cooked to eat, especially the leafy vegetables. Some of them such as tomatoes, cucumbers can also be raw to eat.”
Our friend explained:” Oh, it’s ok. We eat salad usually before the main course. Its quantity is not too much. It makes the person’s appetite. In addition we think vegetable salad is a very healthy food. This kind of salad mostly mixes of three or more vegetables. The nutrition is more comprehensive. Most of vegetables in salad don't need to heat. This will keep nutrition from be damaged or lost. Maybe you can try a little. If you can’t accept it, it’s no problem. We have some others to eat.”
My colleague carefully took some pieces tomato and cucumber from salad to eat. He thought so is not strange. We sometimes eat them raw in China. His expression was much more relaxed. Even so, we talked that day very happy. Now my colleague occasionally eats some vegetable salad. He thinks it good.

    Culture Bump Analysis

    Step 1: Pinpoint the Bump
Our friend made vegetable salad to us to eat. But my colleague felt as if to eat grass. This is the culture bump between them.
Step 2: Describe what both participants did
The friend said that salad is his good work. My colleague immediately took it to eat.
Step 3: List emotions when the culture bump occurred.
    My colleague was very embarrassed.
Step 4: Find the universal situation in the incident.
The universal situation in the culture bump is how to eat vegetables, raw or cooked?
Step 5: List expectations for that universal.
For friend: He thought he made salad so good. And salad as the meal antipasto makes the person’s appetite. In addition salad is a very healthy food. The nutrition is more comprehensive. Most of vegetables in salad don't need to heat. This will keep nutrition from be damaged or lost.
For colleague: He thought that cooked vegetables haven’t bacteria. It’s more advantageous to the stomach. After cooking with the seasoning, it’s taste will be very good, so he usually eat cooked vegetable.

Step 6: Find the personal meaning for when expectations are met.

Step 7: Have a conversation between participants.
They had a conversation. They exchanged their ideas and different diet cultures. Then they could understand each other.

  7. The way of teaching
    1. One of the culture bumps I encounter with most is the difference of teaching method between Chinese and American.
    2. For example, couple of days before the teacher asked us to team up with other classmates and do a presentation about the content of chapter three.
    3. I looked at my teacher
    4. I was kind of surprised and then I felt nervous about it because I’ve never done a presentation before. Especially I have to form a team with other students. The thought of “what if I mess it up” really worried me.
    5. Here teachers focus more on students’ ability of critical thinking and teamwork, and they feel that students will learn better when working with their fellow students. So teachers tend to give tasks to students and let them find the solution or conclusion themselves and give individual help when necessary.
    6. In China, when teachers want to help students with their study, they will most likely meet them after class individually and give them extra exercise, check it and then offer advice for improvement.
    7. When being taught in the Chinese way, it is easier for me to solve problems because the teacher will guide me through the whole thing. However, I just get the answer, not the ability of learning. I will be dependent, and when having problems I will prefer asking for help to trying to solve it myself.
    8. On the other hand, American teachers feel that they should concern more about a student’s ability of handling objections and teamwork.

  10. Hi, that is one of my culture bump with a friend. There are many ways to show respect to one another, while the culture differ. My friend and classmate told me that in his country, people don't greet and smile at a strange person because they don't know them. Moreover, if a stranger smile at them, they become suprised, angry or worse.Unlike,in my country, it is a polite gesture even though we don't know this person. It is a normal thing that we do all the time. I was very suprised:"Why do people care about greeting and smilling ". The universal situation is how to show respect to another person stranger or not. I was suprised because I didn't expect this act can be strange to another person. He was suprised that people can greet and smile everyone although they never met before. Now when I think about that, I believe that his country must have another way to show respect. To show respect can be differnt from one country to another. Some countries can be more demanding than another. I expect that we respect this differnce and share the universal respect. Moreover, my friend and I are a lot of thing that we share like friendship, family.

  11. Jimmy's Culture Bump

In Venezuela the culture is when you will to greet somebody (man to woman or woman to woman) you kiss her cheek, no matter if the person you met recently. In our culture we do that for courtesy and for education, we don’t think if we are going to do that we just do it. Now I know isn’t the same thing in others cultures. People in America are affectionate but just with people who are very close friends, maybe this happen in others cultures too.
My Culture Bump: I was walking in the university and I met my Venezuelan friends, they were with a Chinese girl, I was greeting my Venezuelan friends with a kiss and when I was going to greet the Chinese girl she moved off me.
Her feelings: Maybe she was confused and uncomfortable, because in her culture the people don’t greet like us.
My feelings: I felt very uncomfortable and grieved.
Later of a few days, I understand she did do that with bad intention. Her reaction was that because in her culture isn’t in my culture, that brings us to a CULTURE BUMP! In this days I learned about others cultures and now I know what I can do and what I can’t do. Now when I am going to greet a girl from another culture and just say “Hello” to her and I give a smile.

  16. Edwin's Culture Bump

    Culture Bump
    Edwin KIM
Last June, I came to America. At that time, all most was interest; trees, people, animals even sky. Of course almost are same to Korea but everything were interest. I started new my life style once I had culture shock to my area. Even though America is one of the countries, which is the cultural difference still existed.
I want to discuss about the culture shock that I experienced. Firstly, I want to discuss about service attitude. I felt very unpleasant when I visited drive license office. All officers were slow to handle things and they had an attitude problem. All day they were haughty and arrogant attitude to customer, but nobody complained to the officer. In Korea, if officer did arrogant attitude to customer, we must complain to the officer or government. Secondly, service is very slow to handle things and service quality level is low. For example, if my computer has some problems, I must visit to service center to take my computer and they makes a long business of having fix. Korea service system is really difference from America. We don’t go to the service center, because workers visit our house and they don’t make a long business of having fix. They just use under an hours. If they need some times, they take my computer themselves and next day they must give back to computer at my house. I had culture shock else in class. During class hours, some students slouch in their chair. Koreans think, this posture is very rude to teacher. Because bad posture is look like ignore teacher and it is against etiquette to teacher. Finally, I was really surprised when some students called teacher’s name. Because it’s against etiquette and we should show regard to teacher. So Koreans never call teacher’s name and also never call old person’s name.
However, this culture shock also one of countries culture, so we need accept a new culture. Because I think, the reason culture shock is that we are not prepared to accept these conditions. From that experience, culture shock can be an excellent lesson in values and in understand human differences.
